Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Olive Punchion said: “It is always a pleasure to find out more about policing in South Tyneside and whilst Dame Vera was here we thought it fitting to mark her appointment as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. We applaud the work of the police in South Tyneside and continue to work in partnership with them to keep our Borough safe.”

Councillors agreed a vote of thanks to Dame Vera Baird and Northumbria Police for their continuing work.

Dame Vera said: “I was delighted to be invited, along with the Chief Constable, to provide members with a policing update.
