OPCC’s Nitin Shukla nominated for top diversity award

17th June 2016

A community champion and employee at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria has been nominated for a positive role model award in the race, faith and religion category at the 2016 National Diversity Awards.

The ceremony recognises the  achievements of individuals and organisations across the UK who go above and beyond in their respective fields of diversity including age, disability, gender, race, faith, religion and sexual orientation.

Nominated by Vera Baird QC, Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Nitin Shukla, from Chapel House, has been praised for his long-standing commitment to improving cultural relations within the community, both in and out of the workplace.

Nitin’s achievements include promoting blood donations within BME Communities, running marathons across the world for good causes, and acting as vice chair of ITV Tyne Tees Diversity Panel.  He was also previously the Chief Executive of Asian Business Connexions, a Community Interest Company and social enterprise which connects, supports and promotes the Asian Business community.

This isn’t the first time Nitin has been a contender for a diversity award – when he was the vice chair of Your Homes Newcastle, a social housing organisation, he picked up the Diversity Champions award in the housing sector at the Tees Valley BME Achievement Awards.

Commenting on why she nominated Nitin Shukla, Vera Baird, said: “It’s an honour to have Nitin work for my office – he  works tirelessly to bring different communities together and is a friend to all. He is driven by the desire to ensure every individual has the opportunity to realise their full potential.

“He always goes that extra mile whether it’s running a marathon or bringing wonderful curries into the office in return for charity donations – he really goes above and beyond to make a difference across a range of communities. I wish him the best of luck with this award and hope the people of Northumbria will cast a vote in recognition of all he does for people of all backgrounds here in the North East.”
